Matt Stuart made this great comment paying respect to the legendary photographer Gary Winogrand. To paraphrase, Matt points out how in Winogrand’s compositions there is a choreography because you can see people’s feet as they move. A still image that strongly suggests motion is one of my markers of a good photo on a roll, and something I continue to aspire to.
Sydney CBD is relatively a walkable city, which is an advantage for me. I move through and amongst people; occasionally they become subjects, but there is a pleasure in walking whether I take a photo or not. The French describe this practice as that of a flâneur, a city wanderer, which feels apt in my case. Being outside is a constant visual feast. Only recently in human history have medical studies identified the positive impacts of walking to mental health, but I could have easily pointed that out without extensive research. It is good to be outside!
